Chicken Noodle Soup

In my recent post about ways to avoid colds and flu and to help you recover sooner if you are unwell, I mentioned how there is evidence to suggest that chicken soup actually does assist you to recover from colds and flu.

 Dr. Stephen Rennard, MD at the University of Nebraska Medical Centre says: “Although it isn’t a cure for the common cold, the proof is in the pudding that it does indeed provide relief from the symptoms. All of the research agrees that soup helps to break up congestion and eases the flow of nasal secretions. Chicken soup also inhibits the inflammatory response causing sore throats.”  He also discovered that the soup inhibited the movement of neutrophils, the most common type of white blood cell that defends against infection. Dr. Rennard theorizes that by inhibiting the migration of these infection-fighting cells in the body, chicken soup essentially helps reduce upper respiratory cold symptoms.

So in addition to all this, Chicken Soup is:

Cleansing: Plenty of fluids is advised when you’re unwell, soup is good this way, the extra fluids help to flush away the attacking allergens and our battling antibodies also need to be flushed in order to become well.

Disinfecting: Chicken soup is generally fairly salty from all the stock used, so that as you swallow it, it acts in much the same way as gargling warm salty water, which helps removes bacteria in the throat, mouth, and tonsils.

Clears sinuses: Warm liquids can help to clear the sinuses with steam.

Strengthening: The lean protein in chicken and nutrients from added vegetables work to bolster your strength when your body is feeling drained of energy.

Nutritious: The ingredients contain healing properties, for example:

Chicken: contains cysteine, an amino acid that is thought to help thin mucus in the lungs, making it easier to expel.

Carrots: (which contain beta-carotene) and celery (which contains vitamin C), both of which help to boost the immune system and fight infection.

Onions: provide the benefit of antioxidants that reduce inflammation and act as an antihistamine.

Turmeric:  The active compound in turmeric, curcumin is believed to have a wide range of biological effects including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tumour, antibacterial and antiviral activities, which indicate potential in clinical medicine.  In Chinese medicine, it is used for treatment of various infections and as an antiseptic.
